Canadian Folk Duo ‘Mama’s Broke’ to play at Rochdale Folk Festival

23 May 2022

We are absolutely thrilled that Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler AKA ‘Mama’s Broke’ will treat us to songs from their brand-new album ‘Narrow Line’ on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June.

The multi-instrumentalist duo are known for delivering powerful performances with heart and raw energy. Their two strong voices blend to create haunting harmonies, while they artfully juggle fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin. They also incorporate traditional dance and foot percussion into their shows.

‘Narrow Line’ was released on 13th May and is already receiving fantastic reviews. Folk Radio UK say their “unique voices must be heard”.

Formed in 2014, the pair became a band after sharing a very long car journey. Lisa recalls “Amy was driving her old Mercedes from Montreal to Nova Scotia and I was looking for a ride. We spent the 17 hours in the car talking almost exclusively about music. By the time we reached Halifax we started playing together, and within a week or two became a band.”

Their original – and often dark – compositions push the boundaries of tradition and the constraints of genre. Drawing from old-time, Quebecois, blues, punk, Celtic, Balkan and doom metal, they create a soundscape that is both familiar and new.

Their debut album ‘Count The Wicked’ was released in 2019. Of their follow up ‘Narrow Line’, Folk Radio UK go on to say:

“First impressions on ‘Narrow Line’ are that the debut was certainly no fluke; there are no traces of second album syndrome found here. The darkness remains, but what good is music if it does not reflect the range of colours and emotions that life throws at you? And what square punches me about Mama’s Broke’s music are the many tiny, detailed elements that mould together to make a satisfying whole.”
